In a recent turn of events, the developers of the highly popular stargazing app Skyguide announced an out of this world update, which they are calling the “Supermassive” update. The news about the update pushed me to explore the app once more, after I had already used and loved the app, a few years ago. Sky Guide and similar apps are a league of their own because they are equally entertaining and informative. Even if you are not a fan of astronomy, it is hard not to be inspired and impressed by the glimpse of the world Sky Guide opens doors to. To have the ability to see what planets and stars in your area, day or night, in the palm of your hand and you and also learn about what you see shows how far we have come regarding intelligent technology and devices.

From the developers, Fifth Star is the 2014 Apple Design Award Winner due to it’s innovative, beautiful and easy to use a design that allows you to only hold it to the sky to automatically find constellations, planets, satellites and more. Simple and entertaining enough for people of all ages to enjoy. The “Supermassive” add-on is available for $9.99 offer larger catalogs, exclusive cinematic tours, and more.

This update has been long awaited by the fans of the app. The unique features of the Supermassive add-on according to official release are listed below:

  • HIGH DEFINITION ZOOM. Enjoy seamless detail in thousands of galaxies, nebulae, clusters, and planets.
  • 50× LARGER CATALOGS. Dive into 114 million stars, the complete NGC/IC catalog and so much more.
  • CINEMATIC TOURS. Discover the cosmos with breathtaking tours, an exclusive audio-visual series.
  • Added some of the best comets in history & newly visible comets in the future
  • Added the Chinese space laboratory Tiangong-2
  • Updated the map of Mercury

The basic version of the app is available $2.99 in the Apple App Store for iPhone, iPad and the Apple Watch. The supermassive add-on features sound really impressive but the basic app is just as fun and amazing to use, you can still see all of the constellations, planets, satellites, comets and other space objects at your location in your phone’s “field of view” by simply holding it up to the sky. This feature serves as an amazing pass-time when you are outside and have nothing else to do; honestly, I find it more entertaining than playing games. So do not be surprised if you catch me with my phone held up to the sky with an awestruck and excited look on my face, in fact, I invite you to join me in exploring the great beyond, for just $2.99! Completely worth it!

Experience the 2017 Solar Eclipse

The solar eclipse of 2017, which was visible throughout Northern America, is an exciting event especially this was a full solar eclipse after 26 years, it is something a lot of people were looking forward to, and I was among these people and the Sky Guide app was one of the reasons. Not only did the app notify me about the exact time of the eclipse, it also gave me a glimpse of what it would look like from where I was located. With this particular feature, you can jump to any date in the future or past to see what the sky at your location would look like, this is pretty cool.

Space is a living thing and there are constant changes, which means there is a lot for you to see and explore, including comets, constellations, meteor showers and individual stars. The developers add events by hand so that you do not miss the exciting developments.

Find What's Up in your Sky

One more thing, I believe this a great app for travelers that enjoy astronomy, Sky Guide will really add to your travel, exploration experience, so I will be bringing the app along on my next trip to see what the sky have in store for me.

User Interface

Sky Guide has a beautifully designed, easy to use interface that is clean and intuitive. When you log into the app, it collects location information from the phone and from there you will get to see the stars, planets, and constellation according to your specific location. Whenever you click on a star or a planet, the information icon appears to provide more info about what you are looking at. Easy, Simple and Beautiful.

Bottom Line

The Supermassive update and add-on have truly added big and exciting changes to the much-loved app. If you love astrology or have some time to kill and love to learn then Sky Guide is a great app to have and I would totally recommend it for the $2.99 price.
